Greetings! We are Jordan & Melissa and we are international house- & pet-sitters. Jordan hails from Brockville, Ontario & Melissa from Baltimore, Maryland. Together, we started our travels via TrustedHousesitters in October after leaving our home in Tallahassee (Go Noles!) of 4+ years in August of 2017.
Our relationship has always been centered around travel, as we met on a cruise in the Caribbean 8 years ago. Back in March of 2010, we were both on a Royal Caribbean cruise with our friends, where we left from Tampa and visited Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize & Honduras. During that time, Jordan was on holiday from working at Enterprise in Tennessee and Melissa was working her first nursing job in Baltimore.
While we visited each other and talked on the phone regularly afterwards, we both had aspirations of relocating to travel the following year, which ultimately ended up occurring with Jordan going to Seoul to teach English as a second language and Melissa traveling cross-country to start travel nursing in California. However, in the midst of these moves, we continued to keep our relationship a priority as we knew it was something very special.
We continued this long-distance, cross-continental relationship for a year before Jordan found himself back at home in Canada, applying for graduate school to pursue his career in education and Melissa got a nurse travel assignment as close to the Canadian border as possible without crossing it, in Syracuse, NY. This two-hour distance was the closest we had been during our two year relationship and we decided moving together to discover a new city was something we both really wanted to do.
So, in January 2013, we moved into our 500 square foot apartment about 1.5 miles from campus at The Florida State University in Tallahassee, where Jordan would start his graduate program. As one might imagine, after being separated by at least a couple hour drive to living in a closet, we learned a lot about each other in those six months. We, thankfully, found an apartment double the size, with the football stadium a five minute walk away, and moved that summer into what felt like a penthouse suite. It was here where we spent the remaining four years in Tallahassee during which Jordan graduated and worked on a research project for FSU while Melissa worked at the local hospital and surgery center. In addition, we both immersed ourselves in the rich-tennis community where we really improved our game and met even more long-lasting friends. This being said, it was extremely difficult to come to the decision to leave all of this behind without much of a plan except to sell everything and travel.
At the conclusion of the tennis Florida State Championships, Melissa quit her jobs and Jordan was able to work remotely to finish up the project, and we left with no inch to spare in each of our cars.
After pawning most of our belongings off on Melissa's parents, we traveled around the Northeast to some areas we had yet to see, while also visiting friends and family. It wasn't until October while we were back at home in Brockville, where we heeded Melissa's friend, Linda's advice and applied for TrustedHousesitters. We had been following Linda & Mark's pet- & house-sitting adventures for the past couple of years but it was at this time that we felt that it could become our reality, as well.
After some swings and misses, we were lucky enough to land our first sit in the lake district of Indiana, where we looked after three small dogs and fish and we immediately fell in love with the lifestyle. At the end of our unbelievable two weeks in the resort-style house, we had to learn how to part from our new-found relationships. However, as a bit of solace, Linda & Mark informed of us the possibility of doing repeat sits and that livened our spirits.
Following this, we continued to pet- & house-sit along the east coast until we realized the potential to sit in Europe was there and we decided to take advantage of it. Fortunate enough to be invited into Jo & Roger's home in Cookham, England, we found ourselves in the perfect location to spend Christmas with our parents and the wonderful Tibetan Terrior, Jia (this was a dream of Melissa's since watching "The Holiday", and the cottage definitely felt like it could have been from the movie).
Since then, we have been traveling throughout Europe, even longer than we could have ever anticipated, finding some of the best pets and houses to look after. So far we've had stays in the aforementioned England, Scotland, Germany, Spain, Italy & Malta, but we've also had the pleasure of being within close proximity of neighboring countries in between sits, which we visited.
We continue to plan our travels as we go along, hoping to discover new places while enjoying it with more furry friends.
